Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights are now being used more widely by growers all around the world for improved bud-set, increased growth, artificial growing environments and to guarantee production out of season, usually when prices are highest.

LED lighting can be designed so that it provides the plants with exactly the right type of light wavelength for optimal growth. By applying lighting to your crops at specific times, plants can be stimulated to either produce more fruit, be encouraged to flower at times of naturally low light levels, or as in the case of cuttings, accelerate the speed of root establishment and plant development. For greenhouse vegetable crops such as high vine Tomatoes, the introduction of LED lighting in winter crops with associated lower light levels, will enable growers to move earlier to higher stem densities and an associated increase in production.

In order to grow and develop, all plants need to photosynthesize – the process by which plants take in Carbon Dioxide, Water and Sunlight to manufacture their food sources. This results in stronger and more uniform growth rates giving a higher quality plant.

The effect of LED lighting on your plants
The basic concept behind LED lighting is to give plants a light source that they can benefit from, and the light source is configured to the wavelength that is of most benefit to the plant. Light is essential for plant growth. Natural sunlight is the cheapest source available, but for horticulture it is not always attainable in sufficient quantities. Therefore, the use of artificial light has become very common in order to increase production and quality. Plants have a completely different sensitivity to light colours than humans, and every plant has their own sensitivity for colours and intensity of light. Using the efficient light sources for plants, effective light recipes are important to obtain the optimal results in plant production.
So what effect do specific light colours have on growth?
In very general terms, using Blue light on plants can lead to: A more compact plant and a greater effect on stomatal opening with more dark colour leaves and flowers. The use of a Red/far red ratio can lead to: More stretch in the plant when far red light is increased. However, without the presence of any blue light, growth can become excessively stretched. So it is clear that a balance of light spectrum is required when planning any lighting, which in turn has to be matched to your crops growth stage and requirements.
There is a range of lighting possibilities for individual circumstances and it need not be a matter of guess work for the grower. Philips are capable of providing a “light recipe” for growers that is designed to match specific crops and situations. Philips GreenPower LED flowering lamp is the energy saving alternative for
extending day length when cultivating, e.g. bedding plants, producing cuttings from chrysanthemums, kalanchoes and other plants sensitive to the photoperiod. It is also
used to break the dormancy state of plants.
Compared to traditional incandescent lamps, this flowering lamp saves up to 80% on energy costs.
These lamps are usually spaced approx. 3 – 3.2 metres apart and suspended 2 metres above the crop.
Philips has developed three different lamps with specific light recipes for different plants. These are:-

The Philips GreenPower LED toplighting solution is a new step in realizing light recipes for crop growth in the greenhouse.
The modules offers growers a wide variety of opportunities to increase crop production and improve crop quality during the year.
Toplighting can be seen as the direct replacement for High Pressure Sodium Lamps.
Toplights are available in:-
1. Deep Red / Blue
2. Deep Red / White
LED toplighting can offer typical light levels ranging from typically 40-300 μmol/m2/s in a highly efficient way. Finding your X-factors in crop growth and improving your business lead to more earnings than the energy savings only.
Philips GreenPower TLED (25-100 μmol/m2/s) offers an extremely effective and efficient alternative in tissue culture to traditional fluorescent lamps, delivering energy savings up to 70% compared to fluorescent lighting.
GreenPower TLED also improves tissue culture growth parameters, resulting in a higher multiplication factor, better rooting quality and a shortening of the total growth cycle. To improve growth performance dedicated recipes are needed. To achieve this the GreenPower TLED is available in different recipes. These are:-

Philips GreenPower LED production module is specifically designed for multilayer cultivation in conditioned environments with little or no daylight.
The module (50-250 μmol/m2/s) can replace conventional fluorescent lighting, reducing energy consumption by up to 60%.
Low radiant heat emission also allows the light source to be installed closer to the plants, thus improving space utilization.

Philips GreenPower LED interlighting is an unique bi-directional lighting solution.
It can be applied as an interlight supplement for tall plants (such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and roses) in a greenhouse, encouraging previously shaded leaves to photosynthesize and stimulating the plant’s growth potential and efficiency.
The interlighting module has a specially designed aluminum shell with a length of 2.5 metres.
The combination of LED interlighting and HID creates a flexible lighting system. This results in more efficient plant production and considerable energy savings.
